Shiny. Fuzzy. Soft. Bumpy. Furry. Fluffy. All these are textures that screamed to be touched, rubbed, fondled. And if you don’t want anyone doing those things to you, you may want to sit out of this season.
Texture is a prevalent theme this winter, as it usually is. Prada’s fur collars have inspired neckwear in mohair, twisted fur (real and fake), chunky knits, velvet and even feathers. They’re very flattering as long as you don’t try and make them too perfect. With scarves, wear the knot a little loose and slightly to the side. With tie-on collars, wear it a little lopsided and not too tight. The messiness of these looks makes it seem approachable, gives it personality, makes it seem like a real person is wearing them, and not a store mannequin.
Tactile fabrics didn’t just hit accessories, it’s all over clothes. Knits - from chunky to delicate pointelle - are very strong. (Beware of some of those chunky turtleneck sweaters though. Sure, mine makes my legs look fabulously thin, but the thick neck almost cut off my air supply) I saw a mohair coat the other day that made my heart skip a beat. Velvet dresses and skirts are everywhere from Saks to Target.
Rich textures go hand in hand with oppulence and luxe looks, and this season is no exception. Beading, gathering, ruching (kind of like gathering), decorative edges, feathers, and other details are popular. Simple basics are not what’s hot - one of a kind, funky pieces that make a statement are.
Touch is one of the most comforting senses, in my opinion. The right blend of texture and fit can make you feel like you’re wrapped in your security blanket all day long. And, it’s very attractive to others - wearing the right fabric can get you felt up all day long. This season, put on something soft and fuzzy, and enjoy the affection.
